Gerald Asamoah Cup 2026: A football festival full of team spirit and new opportunities

Written on 25 January 2026

Yesterday, Saturday, 24 January 2026, our campus was filled with energy, excitement, and big emotions as the very first Gerald Asamoah Cup took place at the German International School of Accra (GISA). Children aged 9 to 12 had the chance to showcase their football talent and recommend themselves for the newly launched Gerald Asamoah Academy – with the additional opportunity, for those who qualify, to apply for a school scholarship

Team spirit, movement and fair play at the heart of the day

More than just winning matches, the focus of the tournament was on what football is truly about: joy of movement, teamwork, fair play, and meeting others on the pitch. In a lively and creative tournament format, the children experienced football stations inspired by key stages of Gerald Asamoah’s career – from Ghana to Hannover 96 and Schalke 04, all the way to the German national team, with further stops such as St. Pauli and Greuther Fürth.

Video greetings from Germany – and a day of goosebump moments

One of the most special highlights was a video message from Gerald Asamoah himself, sending warm greetings from Germany and wishing all players and families a wonderful football day. His wishes certainly came true: the coaching team led by Head Coach David Detzler witnessed an impressive number of promising young talents who stood out through passion, confidence, and true team spirit Following a further selection process, four children – two girls and two boys – will be offered the opportunity to receive a scholarship at GISA

An exciting tournament with close matches and strong performances

The Gerald Asamoah Cup delivered an impressive and dynamic matchday. Ghana started confidently with a 2–0 win over Greuther Fürth, while FC St. Pauli opened with a strong 2–0 victory against Germany. Several matches remained intense and tightly contested, including Schalke 04’s 1–0 win against Hannover 96 and Ghana’s hard-fought 2–1 victory over FC St. Pauli. Germany fought back with a convincing 3–1 win against Hannover 96 and later earned a 1–1 draw against Greuther Fürth. In the final phase, Germany defeated Schalke 04 2–0, but Ghana secured the overall tournament win with a decisive 2–1 victory against Germany in the direct match-up. The day ended on a high note with FC St. Pauli’s 2–0 win over Schalke 04. Ghana finished first in the final standings with 12 points, followed by FC St. Pauli (9 points) and Schalke 04 (9 points).

Education and football go hand in hand

School director Rainer Kropp-Kurta expressed his gratitude for the renewed cooperation with Gerald Asamoah and emphasised that education and football go hand in hand at GISA: talent development is not only about performance on the pitch, but also about opening doors through learning, responsibility, and community.

We sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this wonderful first Gerald Asamoah Cup – and we already look forward to the next steps of the Gerald Asamoah Academy.
