Kindergarten and Nursery:

Krippe1Krippe2Krippe3This week at the nursery was all about Easter and spring! The children had lots of fun designing colourful Easter eggs on sticky foil with different types of paper. We made beautiful spring flowers from paper plates and they were able to give free rein to their creativity by dotting the Easter bunnies with finger paint. Matching the Easter eggs was a fun way for the children to improve their concentration, their understanding of colours and patterns and their fine motor skills. A special highlight was a visit from giant African snails! The children were able to take a close look at the snails and we talked together about what they look like, what they eat and where they live.

Easter preparations are in full swing in the kindergarten, we have learnt about the Easter story and new words on the subject and have been busy making our Easter baskets. We have also been singing the song ‘Ich lieb den Frühling’ / ‘I like the flowers’ in both German and English in our morning circles. The movement room was also used by the children during these weeks and we played ‘Fire, Water, Storm’ and ‘Run Hare, Sit Hare’ and ran a course. On Friday we had our toy day and the photographer came to visit us - look forward to seeing our great new group pictures in this year's yearbook! In learning time this week we have been playing rhythms with our instruments and colouring in patterns on Easter egg pictures. In maths, the children recognised number pictures and then matched the right number of colourful pompoms to the number cards. In terms of language, we continued to practise clapping syllables and recognising sounds over the two weeks. In DaZ/ DaF, we used picture cards to talk about feelings this week. The children were also asked to practise using the present and past tenses.

Primary school:

In class 1/2, the week began with a visitor. They were first welcomed with a thoughtfully written letter and then given a tour by some of the children. In science, we conducted an exciting experiment on solutions. We mixed various solids into liquids and observed the results: some solids dissolved very quickly, while others didn’t dissolve at all. We discovered that not all solids mix with liquids.

In maths, class 2 continued working on the topic of lengths. They compared different measurements and sorted them by size. They also drew precise lines using a ruler. Class 1 focused on the days of the week and practiced counting: if today is Friday, what day was it two days ago, or what day will it be in four days?

In German, some students practiced using different sentence starters, while others worked on reading comprehension tasks. A few children put great effort into developing a beautiful cursive handwriting. In ethics, we introduced the topic of good luck. We looked at different lucky charms, and each child created their own “jar of happiness” – a hopeful and encouraging activity. Although swimming lessons are currently not taking place, Mister Nana keeps the children engaged with fun movement games during PE. Even pool noodles are being put to excellent use.

Klasse 3 4g copyKlasse 3 4hA week full of learning and discoveries has come to an end for class 3/4. In science lessons, the pupils explored the world of microscopy. They learnt about the microscope's function as a magnification tool and discovered how it makes details visible that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Through practical laboratory work, they identified important components of the microscope and understood their respective functions. The pupils looked at different materials under the microscope and compared their magnified appearance with their everyday form. This experience emphasised the clear difference between the macroscopic and microscopic view. In maths lessons, pupils continued to develop their numeracy skills by calculating with five and six digit numbers - including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In English lessons, Year 3/4 focussed on the ability to answer reading comprehension questions in complete sentences from given texts. The pupils also expanded their vocabulary related to the text, improving their understanding of the text. For fun, the children played communicative board games in groups. This activity allowed the learners to explore their English pronunciation and practise their speaking skills in a fun way. Feel free to encourage your child to share at home what they have learnt and what games they have played. Class 3/4 are looking forward to next week and the Easter egg hunt on Thursday.

Secondary school:

Klasse 5 6cIn German, the fifth and sixth graders have continued to work through the challenge of recognising the difference between ‘s, ss and ß’. To do this, we work a lot with mnemonics and try to link the rules together so that we can recognise which spelling is correct as quickly and reliably as possible. We have also successfully completed synchronised speaking. Parallel to the grammatical input, we practised, recorded, edited and exported. The pupils in Year 6 have the result on their computers. Our sleepover last weekend deserves a special mention. On Friday we stayed at school after lessons and enjoyed our time together. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

‘What do I want to be when I grow up?’

Class 5 6bIn Ethics and IT we continue to work realistically. For the past two weeks, we have been working on job applications and jobs. The pupils can find out about their dream jobs here. We then learnt how to write a CV. This is followed by the letter of application, which should emphasise the individual qualities of each person. Finally, the pupils are put in the situation of a job interview. In biology lessons, the exploration of the internal organs of the body was continued. The pupils learnt to identify these organs and understand their positions. To consolidate this knowledge, they carried out a laboratory exercise in which they correctly placed model organs in a human body representation. The students also had the task of researching the four chambers of the heart and will present their findings next week. In history, there were fantastic presentations on Ancient Rome to marvel at. Teis with explanatory videos brought the pupils back to life from 2000 years ago and took them back to the Colloseum, everyday life and the fascination of this era.

This week in Year 7, creative approaches to the young adult book currently being discussed, such as ‘freeze frame construction’ and productive writing assignments, took centre stage in German lessons. In maths, the pupils have been working on solving equations. In particular with solving positive brackets. In geography, the students looked at the causes and challenges of climate change and were impressed by a documentary by Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim. The pupils are also preparing for the upcoming Cambridge Checkpoints. English will take place on Monday, Maths on Wednesday and Science on Thursday. Tuesday will be lessons as usual. We wish all students good preparation and good luck for the upcoming exams.

DaFaDaf bThis week, the DaF class at secondary level (the motivated pupils in years 5, 6 and 7) have been working on the vocabulary of human anatomy (internal organs) as well as the terms for family members and pets. They drew and then labelled human organs for the biological aspect and took the unknown terms from the dictionary. They also tried to write short texts on an organ of their choice and dictate them to the others. With the topic of family members and pets, the students worked on possessive articles, verb conjugation and personal pronouns in grammar. The students are becoming increasingly confident in verb conjugation and have also become familiar with the accusative object for the first time. This Friday, the DaF group again wrote a learning objective test on the topics covered this week.
