Hercules🎭 A Round of Applause – For Those Behind the Curtain

Last Friday, the spotlight at GISA shone not on our students, but on those who made the school musical Hercules possible with so much dedication and heart. As a small gesture of appreciation and a big thank you, all contributors – teachers, afternoon care staff, and our wonderful interns – were invited to a special outing to the renowned National Theatre of Ghana to watch The Dilemma of a Ghost.

It was a cultural experience that broadened horizons and celebrated the strong sense of community that defines GISA. Thank you to everyone who made the musical an unforgettable success!

🎨 A School Transformed – Thank You, ecoacademy!

WhatsApp Bild 2025 06 12 um 10.19.03 4bb44120What a transformation! Over the past two years, Irina Wehmann and her team from the NGO ecoacademy for changemakers have given the German International School Accra a new face – imaginative, sustainable, and full of creative detail.

  • Grey hallways turned into colourful jungle paths
  • Staircases became underwater worlds
  • Washrooms were transformed into feel-good spaces
  • Old furniture was revived with new life
  • The kindergarten now shines in a whole new light
  • And the library is a completely reimagined space for reading and discovery

As a final highlight, even the once-grey school facades now radiate with bold colours that reflect the vibrancy of our school community.

To mark the end of this extraordinary journey, Irina hosted a very special dinner to thank those who supported her closely over the past two years. And since she’s not only an artistic visionary but also a culinary talent, she and her team served a multi-course meal that could rival any fine dining experience – heartfelt, beautifully presented, and unforgettable.

Irina and the ecoacademy have left a lasting mark on GISA. Thank you for your imagination, perseverance, hard work, colour – and all the love you’ve poured into every detail.

“What are you grateful for?” – This was one of the many meaningful questions discussed during the music workshop with The Souly Bird on Thursday. The answers were diverse and heartfelt. Then came the music: singing, rapping, dancing – all centred around the song Grateful, which stuck in everyone’s head long after the workshop ended.

The children participated with great enthusiasm, guided by a professional and inspiring team. Many adults supported the children, helping them achieve new heights in music and performance.
A big thank you to The Souly Bird and the team – we’re looking forward to the final performance at Thursday’s end-of-year celebration!

🍽️ Staff Appreciation Lunch – A Heartfelt Thank You

WhatsApp Bild 2025 06 12 um 19.59.17 6eca931aOn Thursday, GISA came together to say thank you – not just with words, but with action and a shared meal. The Parent Council organized a beautiful Staff Appreciation Lunch, honouring everyone who contributes to our school’s success every day: teachers, admin staff, gardeners, cleaners, security, and more.

Parent representative Karo Chivasa shared moving words that captured the feeling of many:

“Having a child means carrying your heart outside your body. Letting go each morning can be hard, but you make it so much easier. We celebrated you today to show our appreciation and thanks as parents. Every one of you plays a role in making this school a safe place to learn and grow. You, the staff of the German International School Accra, have been amazing at teaching – and at truly seeing each and every child.”

Ramona Klaes and Nadja Ulrich, on behalf of the teaching staff, responded with gratitude:

“Dear parents, you made this Staff Appreciation Day a truly special event – with delicious food and your generous help in the crèche, kindergarten, and classrooms. Thanks to your support, the entire team was able to take a real break, enjoy a shared meal, and feel genuinely valued. Thank you so much for making that possible!”

Several parents even took over classroom supervision, allowing the staff to enjoy an extended lunch break together – a beautiful gesture and a strong sign of our living community spirit at GISA.

📚 New School Year Kick-Off

🎊 8:00 AM | Welcome Ceremony
– The 2025/26 school year begins with music, community, and a warm welcome to new and returning students

Kindergarten and NurseryT

Krippehis week in the nursery, we crafted Father’s Day gifts with great joy and creativity. The children eagerly engaged in designing something personal for their dads. We also prepared farewell presents for the children who will soon be leaving us. It is particularly important to us to make this transition a loving one and to give each child a meaningful, personal farewell. A special highlight of the week was the face painting! The children transformed into little animals, flowers, or superheroes – imagination knew no bounds, and the excitement was immense! During free play, building with Duplo and playing with playdough were especially popular. These activities not only promoted fine motor skills but also strengthened social interaction – through shared building, sharing, and creative conversations.

KitaIn Kindergarten, several highlights stood out this week. The children had the opportunity to complete the “Pflasterpass” (Band-Aid Certificate). Together with Miriam (a big thank you again!), they explored how to help or seek help when someone is injured. They also learned various techniques such as applying band-aids or wrapping bandages and practiced them immediately on themselves and their stuffed animals. Each child proudly received a certificate for successfully completing the “Pflasterpass.”
Another major event was the preschoolers’ overnight party to mark the end of their time in Kindergarten. There was plenty of playing, pizza and popcorn, and a movie before we all snuggled into bed, tired but happy. It was an exciting experience that ended with a shared breakfast the next morning. We also used the movement room again this week, where everything revolved around the ball! The children had a great time playing football – running, passing, laughing, and cheering. They showed enthusiasm, teamwork, and agility. During our learning time, we explored rhythm on our music day, clapping different patterns and accompanying songs rhythmically. Each child got the chance to lead a rhythm that the others clapped along to. We also got creative by making colorful flower pictures using finger paint and forks – a fun way to explore a new painting technique.

Primary School

Klasse 1 2aKlasse 1 2cIn this week’s English lessons, Class 1/2 pupils were allowed to take their self-written stories home. These were handed over with kind words and a certificate by students from Class 7. In Class 1, the children worked on writing procedural texts about everyday actions, such as washing hands. They learned how to structure these texts properly and use suitable sentence starters to clearly explain each step. In Ethics, Class 1/2 concluded the topic of “happiness.” The children were excited to take home their lovingly designed lapbooks. Many of the children also participated in the workshop with “The Souly Bird” and are now looking forward to Thursday’s performance. The highlight of the week for Class 1/2 was their long-awaited school sleepover on Thursday. It was a wonderful success and a fitting conclusion to a fantastic school year. Thank you to everyone who helped carry mattresses and tables around!

This week, Class 4 completed their final assignment on poetry. Class 3 and our German language learners reflected on the school year, highlighting challenges and achievements and writing about them. Our new German learners watched a fairytale movie in German. In Math, we worked on combinatorics and helped “Piko” find all the different ways to take a photo with his friends. In Science, we explored bacteria that can make us sick and the medications used to treat them. In Music, we learned the symbols that show when to clap and when to stay silent. Now we’re looking forward to our class party and school sleepover – an experience that will stay with us for a long time!

Secondary School

Arguing effectively needs to be practiced. In Year 6 German, things got exciting this week: in heated debates, students learned how to defend a position and build convincing arguments. We analyzed power dynamics in different situations and practiced turning simple claims into solid arguments through reasoning and examples – a key skill not only for German class! Ethics, IT, and Handwork, Technology, Crafts (HTW) – the creative finale: preparations are in full swing for next week’s exhibition, where students will showcase their diverse projects and discoveries from the past weeks. All classes are putting the finishing touches on their work – we can’t wait to see the results!

In Year 7, we continued working on argumentation and indirect speech. We also watched the successful film adaptation of the novel Holes and compared it to the book. In PE, students are polishing the final details of their acrobatic choreography, which they will perform next Wednesday. In Math, we continued developing new games for the Active Floor around the topic of percentages. We wish everyone a wonderful weekend and a great final week of school!

Secondary DaF Class (German as a Foreign Language)

DaF 1DaF 6The motivated learners from Years 5, 6, and 7 focused this week on clothing vocabulary, perfect tense formation, and further team-building exercises.
The vocabulary centered mostly around familiar verbs of state and motion, clothing items, and new adjectives.
In grammar, students were introduced to the first forms of the perfect tense and the correct use of the auxiliary verbs haben and sein.
They also practiced word order and conjugation of modal verbs. On Tuesday, during the final team-building workshop, the learners reflected on their learning journey. In small groups, they repeated the same tasks from the very first day – now under time pressure. They solved the challenges much more calmly, precisely, and collaboratively than before – a sign of their great progress. In preparation for Father’s Day this Sunday (June 15), the students wrote heartfelt German texts for their dads. Today (Friday), the group visited the library. The learners read aloud in teams – to each other and to the preschool children – and further practiced pronunciation. On Thursday, the DaF group also completed a learning check covering the week’s topics. Today, there was also a skills test focusing on listening and speaking.
