“Coffee with DaF” at the German International School Accra – Experiencing Language Learning Firsthand

Learning German is not always easy – but with the right methods, it becomes engaging, accessible, and successful. This week, interested parents at the German International School Accra had the opportunity to experience this for themselves. At our first “Coffee with DaF,” they gained valuable and practical insights into German language teaching with our DaF expert, Mr. Benjamin Akrong.

The session began with a look at the fundamentals: Which materials do students use, and how are they structured? Many parents were surprised to see that the textbooks are entirely in German and that German is predominantly spoken in class. The challenges this presents were not fully apparent to everyone beforehand – making it all the more impressive to witness how quickly students are able to form their first words and sentences.

Parents then became learners themselves: Through a role play and a “fact bingo” activity, they experienced key teaching methods firsthand and explored their own learning strategies. These activities highlighted the importance of playful learning, repetition, and active language use.

Of course, there was also time for informal exchange among parents – accompanied by coffee, which gives the format its name and creates a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.

We are delighted by the strong interest and positive feedback. We warmly invite all parents to join our next “Coffee with DaF” on 16 April 2026, where we will focus, among other things, on oral motor skills development and simple, practical approaches to learning grammatical structures.
