Discover, Create, Understand – Project Time at the German International School Accra
Creativity, language, culture, research and independent learning: during Project Time in Primary and Secondary School, our students are given the space to explore beyond subject boundaries, try out new ideas and develop their own projects.
In Primary School, playful learning and creative work take centre stage. In “Puppet Pals”, students create their own stories, bring characters to life and turn their ideas into short videos using iPads. In “Fun with Clay”, children design their own objects and gain hands-on experience through creative work.
Students embark on a cultural journey in “German Festivals” and “Once Upon a Time in Germany”. They explore festivals, customs and traditions throughout the year, as well as well-known fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, and express their ideas through storytelling, crafts and creative design. Music takes centre stage in “Germany Sounds: A Musical Journey Through Germany”, where folk songs from different regions meet classical and popular music and are brought to life in small stage performances.
In Secondary School, the questions become more complex, but the principle remains the same: explore independently, understand connections and present results creatively.
In “Natural Ecosystems in Germany”, students examine selected habitats, their characteristics and the challenges and threats they face. “Germany Through the Year” focuses on seasons, festivals and traditions and brings the students’ findings together in a self-designed calendar.
Art, language and digital media come together in “Famous German Art”. Students explore selected works of art, consider colours, atmosphere and background, and create their own audio descriptions for a small audio museum.
“Berlin Calls Accra” combines music, theatre, movement and spoken language, creating a lively encounter between Berlin and Accra. Social change is at the heart of “Germany in Motion – Germany Is Changing”, where students explore migration, identity, culture and global connections and present their findings in a gallery walk.
Project Time from Primary through Secondary School shows just how varied learning can be: playful and research-based, practical and digital, creative and critical. Above all, it gives our students the opportunity to contribute their own interests, take responsibility for their learning and create something new together.
One shared goal connects the projects across the different year groups: selected results will be presented on Saturday, 31 October 2026, as part of German Language Day on the GISA campus. Together with numerous other cultural and language partners, our students will show how lively and diverse an encounter with the German language and culture can be.
