Enthusiastic Ghana Day at the German International School Accra
Three nations celebrate — and build bridges for the future
With vibrant rhythms, moving performances, and strong international spirit, the German International School Accra yesterday celebrated its Ghana Day as part of the school’s 60th anniversary. Under the motto “Celebrating together — three nations”, the campus transformed into a lively stage for cultural exchange between Ghana, Germany, and Switzerland.
The festive opening was led by the traditional drumming and dance group Anansesem, which immediately energized the audience. This was followed by a touching violin performance of a Swiss song, powerfully highlighting the trilateral character of the celebration.
The entire school on stage
The strength of the school community became especially visible through the broad participation of all age groups. The Kindergarten children presented a lovingly prepared contribution and quickly won the hearts of the audience. The DaF Intensive Class then demonstrated through a musical performance how lively and effective language support is implemented at the German International School Accra.
During the VIP Ghana segment, the audience embarked on an interactive journey through the country’s history. Spectators playfully identified important Ghanaian personalities and their impact — a vivid example of activating and competency-based learning.
The Agokoli Theatre followed with strong stage presence, before the project dance group delivered another highlight. The dance performance in particular impressed with its expressiveness, precision, and emotional depth, earning sustained applause from the audience.
Meaningful words and strong partnerships
The official greetings reflected the school’s strong international network.
Speaking on behalf of the Swiss Embassy, Magdalena Wüst-Tiendrebeogo praised the remarkable diversity of the children who shape the vibrant life of the German International School Accra today.
Frederik Landshöft, Ambassador of Germany, highlighted the school’s strategic opening in recent years. He emphasized its successful development into a true Begegnungsschule (school of encounter) and underlined its growing importance as a key cultural and linguistic bridge-building institution in Ghana.
Lukas Brauchbar conveyed greetings from the Ramseyer Foundation. A special academic note was added by Prof. Dr. Winnie-Karen Giera, who delivered remarks on behalf of the University of Potsdam, symbolizing the school’s expanding cooperation network.
Particularly moving was the contribution of Renate Saywerr, who served the school as an educational staff member for more than five decades and spoke in symbolic representation of the alumni. Her words built a powerful bridge between the school’s past, present, and future.
More than a school celebration
Ghana Day once again demonstrated the dynamic development of the German International School Accra in recent years: growing, open, internationally connected, and firmly rooted in Ghana. With around 140 students, the school is increasingly positioning itself as an important cultural mediator in the region.
The subsequent come-together with live music, international food, and many personal encounters made one thing clear: community here is not just discussed — it is lived every day.
A celebration that resonates
Ghana Day 2026 in this anniversary yearwas a resounding success — colorful, connecting, and driven by the palpable commitment of the entire school community. It once again showed what the German International School Accra stands for: education that builds bridges and brings people together. 🇬🇭🇩🇪🇨🇭✨
