Enthusiastic Premiere of “Anigyeɛ – The Magic Drum”
Colourful market stalls, captivating music, impressive dance performances, and an enthusiastic audience: on Thursday evening, the German International School Accra celebrated the premiere of “Anigyeɛ – The Magic Drum.” This creative adaptation of Disney’s Encanto, reimagined in a Ghanaian setting, transformed the school campus into the vibrant village of Anigyeɛ for one unforgettable evening.
Even before the performance began, visitors became part of the story. Guests were guided through a specially designed village market, immersing themselves in the world of Anigyeɛ step by step. Market stands, decorations, and countless thoughtful details created a unique atmosphere long before the first scene unfolded.
At the heart of the story is young Abena, the only member of her family without a magical gift. When the village’s magical drum—the source of its strength and unity—begins to lose its power, she sets out on a journey to find her own path. Along the way, she discovers that courage, honesty, and togetherness can be more powerful than any special ability. The musical explores themes such as self-confidence, the pressure of perfection, family bonds, and the value of diversity.
The students impressed the audience with their enthusiasm, strong acting performances, expressive dancing, and musical talent. Their confidence and commitment on stage reflected the tremendous amount of effort and dedication invested in the production over many months.
The musical was made possible through the work of a dedicated team of 16 teachers and support staff. Artistic leadership was provided by Sara Debackere and Ramona Klaes, who worked alongside numerous colleagues on the concept, rehearsals, stage design, costumes, music, and choreography. At the same time, the entire school community contributed to bringing the village of Anigyeɛ to life.
The organisers themselves were deeply impressed by the students’ performances. Ramona Klaes particularly highlighted one acting role, saying: “Nana Adwoa as the strict grandmother completely blew me away.” Sara Debackere praised one of the evening’s dance highlights: “Alexis’ solo dance as Abena was simply stunning.”
At the end of the premiere, the ensemble surprised Headmaster Rainer Kropp-Kurta by performing his favourite song, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. In his closing remarks, he thanked everyone involved and recognised the remarkable commitment of all participants. As a gesture of appreciation, he presented the 16 teachers and support staff who had prepared the musical over many months with flowers.
The premiere demonstrated what can be achieved when an entire school community works together towards a shared vision. With “Anigyeɛ – The Magic Drum,” the German International School Accra created an evening that creatively connected Ghanaian and German perspectives while bringing the school’s core values to life: togetherness, mutual respect, and building bridges across cultures.
Following this successful opening night, excitement is now building for the second and final performance on Friday evening.
