Federal President Steinmeier in Ghana – Encounters and Honours with Links to GISA
The state visit of German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Ghana was also a special occasion for the German International School Accra (GISA). During a reception at the residence of the German Embassy, Headmaster Rainer Kropp-Kurta had the opportunity to briefly share insights into the school’s positive development – including new partnerships, growing student numbers and GISA’s contribution to education and intercultural understanding in Ghana.
During the same reception, two individuals closely connected to the school were honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit: Martin Wilde, parent and former Chair of the GISA Board, and Gerald Asamoah, former German national football player and long-standing partner of the school through his foundation. Both were recognised for their outstanding commitment to fostering German-Ghanaian relations and for their role as bridge builders between the two countries.
At present, a medical team from the Gerald Asamoah Foundation is in Accra, treating children with congenital heart defects at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital – a project that GISA follows with great appreciation and supports with small gestures such as fresh fruit and coffee for the team.
The encounters during the state visit highlight how closely education, engagement and international cooperation are intertwined. Within this network, GISA sees itself as a place of learning and exchange – true to its guiding principle: Building bridges between people, cultures and continents.
