German Club at the German International School Accra – Bringing Language to Life
For several weeks now, the German Club at the German International School Accra has been meeting regularly in the afternoons: the DaF groups of Grades 7/8 come together on Mondays, while Grades 5/6 meet on Tuesdays. The main focus is on one key goal – speaking freely. Students are encouraged to actively use familiar phrases and sentence structures, building confidence in their use of the German language.
Through a variety of engaging and motivating activities, students have the opportunity to try out, expand, and consolidate their language skills in a playful and supportive environment. The German Club provides a safe space where language comes alive and communication takes center stage.
Last week, the focus was on the topic “Daily Routine.” Students first organized different activities and then presented their own daily routines. This led to lively conversations, with questions such as “What do you eat for breakfast?” or “How do you get to school?” becoming a natural part of their interaction.
This week, the topic “School” was explored in more depth, with a special focus on the different rooms at GISA. Students matched vocabulary to the various school spaces through a puzzle activity and then tested their knowledge in a fun GISA quiz.
There is more to look forward to: after the Easter break, the German Club will turn to a culinary theme. The focus will be on “Food,” with special attention to students’ favorite dishes.
The German Club is a wonderful example of how language learning becomes effective and meaningful through active use, enjoyment, and exchange – truly reflecting our guiding principle: Building bridges through language.
