🏗️ Double Construction Project – Investments in Quality and Safety

Two important construction projects are currently taking place simultaneously at the German International School Accra. After a long period of preparation, our multifunctional room is finally receiving its new sports flooring. The delivery experienced further delays due to the impact of the Iran conflict, making the wait even longer. We are therefore especially pleased that the new soft sports floor is now being installed in blue — the colour chosen by our school community at the beginning of the school year.

At the same time, the balustrade in the primary school building is being raised to further improve safety for our students. For this project, we are deliberately using sustainable bamboo, combining safety, functionality, and environmental responsibility.

🧸 Nursery and Kindergarten

Krippe 1This week, the children in the nursery continued exploring the topic of water, with a special focus on animals. While rescuing animals trapped in “ice blocks”, the children playfully strengthened their fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities. Creative activities such as painting and crafting fish also encouraged imagination and artistic expression.

By washing and caring for toy animals, the children gained important sensory experiences with water and developed an early understanding of care and hygiene.

In kindergarten, the past few days revolved around the exciting topic of professions 👩‍⚕️👨‍🚒👮‍♂️👩‍🍳👨‍🔧👩‍🏫🚑🚒. The children greatly enjoyed learning about different jobs, talking about them, and discovering together what people do in their everyday work lives.

During learning time, the children also explored magnets 🧲🔍. They experimented, tested different objects, and were fascinated to discover which materials are magnetic and how magnetism works.

Of course, music time was once again a joyful highlight 🎶🥁🎤. With great enthusiasm, the children sang, played instruments, and practised diligently for our musical 🌟🎭💃🕺. The children are making wonderful progress and are increasingly growing together as one big ensemble.

Alongside all these activities, our regular kindergarten routine included free play, shared activities, movement, and many beautiful moments of friendship and togetherness.

A special highlight at the end of the week was our movie day on the topic of professions 🎬🍿. Together, the children were able to explore different professions once again in an exciting and child-friendly way while enjoying a cosy afternoon together.

Primary School

Classes 1/2

In German, Classes 1/2 focused on long and short vowels. The children listened carefully to identify whether a vowel sound was long or short and learned their first spelling strategies connected to this topic. One important rule they discovered was that short vowels are often followed by two consonants or a double consonant, while long vowels are usually marked differently. This video provided helpful listening examples: https://youtu.be/LYNe45odpUQ?feature=shared

In Mathematics, we worked with fact families. The children explored how addition and subtraction problems belong together and how several related equations can be formed from one number sentence. We also investigated similar connections between multiplication and division problems. This helped the children understand that mathematical operations are connected rather than isolated tasks.

In English, we continued working with the story “The Enormous Turnip”. The children greatly enjoyed acting out the story in small groups through role play. This helped them better understand the sequence of events, retell the story in their own words, and practise new vocabulary. Please feel free to encourage your child to retell the story again at home.

Classes 3/4

In German lessons, the children worked intensively on sentence elements and explored how sentences are structured. A particular focus was placed on identifying the subject and predicate within sentences. The students also continued working on their reading role projects, resulting in many long and creative contributions. In spelling, the children focused on words with double consonants as well as the special spelling patterns “tz” and “ck”.

Klasse 3 4 1Klasse 3 4 3Klasse 3 4 5

In Mathematics, the children completed the topic of “Time”, practising both reading clocks and calculating time intervals.

Class 3 worked diligently on mastering the multiplication tables up to ten and strengthening their calculation strategies. Class 4 focused intensively on written multiplication and practised solving multiplication problems confidently using written methods.

Secondary School

Class 5

In German lessons, we are entering the final phase of our reading journal project. To conclude our class novel, the students are creating a so-called “reading box”. For this activity, each child needs a shoebox or a similar container. Inside the box, students collect and design objects that play an important role in the story or that accompanied them during the reading process.

📐 Mathematics Class 5 – Geometry with Skill and Precision

Klasse 5 MaThis week, we continued working intensively on the topic of geometry in Mathematics. The students drew numerous geometric figures, calculated areas, and deepened their understanding of parallel lines.

Using the set square is becoming increasingly familiar to us. Through many practical exercises, we learned helpful tricks and techniques for accurate measuring and precise drawing.

At the end of the week, the students demonstrated their skills in a small geometry competition. This required not only mathematical understanding, but also careful work and practical precision. With great motivation and concentration, the students showed what they had already learned and achieved excellent results.

We are looking forward to continuing to develop our skills further in the coming weeks while revisiting and discovering new topics in geometry.

10000748001000074802In Geography, the students are currently creating very creative presentations of Germany’s neighbouring countries, displayed informatively inside shoeboxes.

Class 6

🎒 Class 6 – Excitement, Preparation, and Challenging Mysteries

Klassenrat 1This week, there was really only one major topic in our class: OUR SCHOOL SLEEPOVER! The excitement accompanied us throughout the entire week. Already on Monday morning, we began preparing intensively for Friday. Together, we organised ourselves, collected ideas for food and drinks, discussed possible games and movies, and even created a music playlist.

On Wednesday, tasks were assigned and everyone decided which items they would bring along. We also clarified remaining questions. Now the anticipation is rising even more — we are very excited for tonight and curious about everything that awaits us!

Alongside the preparations, we also worked hard in class. In German lessons, the focus was on process descriptions and revising object descriptions. Using a practice test, we specifically prepared for the final German class test of this school year, which will take place next week.

Deutsch 1Deutsch 2Deutsch 4

During the joint lessons with the DaF learners, the students applied object descriptions in a practical way. In small groups, they investigated and experimented with the mysterious “banana needle trick”. Using pictures and short written explanations, the students tried to reconstruct how the trick works. One group succeeded particularly well, while the others were initially left with quite a mystery.

EnglishIn English lessons, the students continued working on the topic “Writing a Biography”. They researched information about a person of their choice, collected relevant facts, and organised them meaningfully. The students showed great interest in the topic and collaborated very well within their groups. The presentations will take place next week.

In Mathematics, we also worked intensively on dividing decimal fractions. We practised many calculations until our heads were almost spinning — but by now, we feel much more confident solving these problems.

Overall, it was a varied week full of preparation, teamwork, learning, and growing excitement for a very special shared experience.

Classes 7/8

📚 German Classes 7/8 – Preparation, Reading, and Reflection

This week, we worked on a variety of topics in German lessons. For the native German speakers, the main focus was the final preparation for next week’s class test. Together, we read texts, summarised content, and reviewed our knowledge through a practice test.

Afterwards, the students reflected independently on their results, identified their strengths, and noted important points to remember for the upcoming class test. In addition, we completed exercises on sentence structure, sentence formulation, and punctuation in order to further strengthen our language skills.

Klasse 7 8 2Klasse 7 8 3

During the joint lessons with the DaF learners, reading time was used very intensively. The students worked with great concentration on their class readings and continued completing tasks in their reading journals. The focus was on careful reading, text comprehension, and discussing what had been read.

This week therefore helped us not only expand our knowledge, but also strengthen important foundations for future tasks in German lessons.

Klasse 7 8 1In Mathematics, Class 8 worked on various tasks involving daily and monthly interest rates. Class 7 practised percentage calculations intensively in order to strengthen their understanding of percentages, base values, and percentage rates. Together, Classes 7 and 8 also applied and deepened their knowledge through a fun board game on percentages and interest calculations.

To prepare for the upcoming class test, the students are additionally working with a competency check that allows them to independently review their results and assess their own learning progress.

In Ethics lessons, the students collected information and knowledge about mosques in preparation for our upcoming excursion to the National Mosque of Ghana in Accra.

In Biology, we concluded our topic on viruses and bacteria by discussing the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a current affairs lesson. The students explored causes, transmission, and protective measures, while also discussing the importance of international cooperation in the field of global health.

In History, the students are currently creating a “wall newspaper” comparing different revolutions throughout human history.

In Geography, the focus was on exogenic processes. The students learned about different forms of weathering. Frost weathering was examined as an example of physical weathering, while the formation of karst caves served as an example of chemical weathering. Together, the students also explored the importance of these processes in everyday life, for example in relation to roads and mountainous regions.
