๐ฟ๐จ Art and Environmental Awareness in Focus: โThe Living Wildโ Exhibition at the German International School Accra

On 29 May 2026, the German International School Accra hosted the impressive art and environmental exhibition The Living Wild by Mowgli โ environmental artist, activist, and scientist.
Throughout the day, numerous students visited the exhibition Life is Dying in the Multifunctional Room and engaged with its striking photographs and artworks. The exhibition highlighted both the beauty and the fragility of interconnected ecosystems in Ghanaโs Western Region, encouraging visitors to reflect on the impact of resource extraction, biodiversity loss, and climate change.
By combining wildlife photography, art, science, and activism, the exhibition made complex environmental issues accessible and tangible. Many visitors took the opportunity to explore the works in depth and engage with the important themes presented.
The German International School Accra sincerely thanks Mowgli for this inspiring exhibition and for her valuable contribution to environmental education at our school.

Nursery and Kindergarten
This week, the children in the Nursery explored the fascinating world of water and colours. Through a variety of hands-on experiments, they discovered how colours behave and change when mixed with water.
By combining coloured water with oil, painting with colourful ice cubes, and conducting a rainbow experiment, the children gained their first scientific experiences in a playful way. At the same time, their sensory perception, creativity, and curiosity were encouraged as they observed, experimented, and made their own discoveries.
Another exciting week full of little moments of exploration has come to an end.
Thanks to the rainy weather ๐ง๏ธ, this week felt especially cosy in our Kindergarten ๐งธ. We explored numbers ๐ข and letters ๐ค through playful activities and created colourful palm trees using finger paints ๐ด๐จ.
We also began our new topic, Fairy Tales ๐โจ. The children listened to and participated in interactive stories and used story dice to invent their own creative fairy tales ๐ฒ๐ซ.
Alongside audio stories ๐ง, dance activities ๐, and shared reading time ๐, free play ๐ค remained at the heart of our daily routine.
A creative, joyful, and varied week comes to an end. ๐
Primary School
Class 1/2
In English, the children took part in a library session and shared the main ideas of their stories with one another. This helped build their confidence and encouraged them to talk about what they had understood.
In Mathematics, Grade 1 focused on even and odd numbers, while Grade 2 practised multiplication through real-life word problems. For example: How many points would you score if four arrows hit the number 7 on a target? Or how many points would you score if two arrows landed on 8 and three arrows landed on 6?
In German, the children wrote wonderful and highly personal farewell letters for classmates who will be leaving our school at the end of the academic year. They put a great deal of effort into creating thoughtful and heartfelt messages.
In Science, we discussed healthy eating and learned which foods we should eat more of and which we should enjoy in moderation. It has been particularly encouraging to see how much healthier the children's breakfasts have become over time. Together, we are staying fit, strong, and focused.
Class 3/4
Between exciting lessons, our visit to the mosque, and our class sleepover, this week was especially varied and full of memorable experiences.
In German, the children continued exploring sentence structure on their individual learning journeys. Working independently and with partners, they identified and highlighted subjects and predicates. Several reading-role projects were also successfully completed.
In English, the focus was largely on vocabulary development, with special attention given to homophones. Students were assessed on spelling, understanding word meanings in context, and using the correct words in both reading and writing.
Mathematics lessons focused on revising current topics in preparation for a successful class test.
Grade 3 worked on telling time, written addition and subtraction, and multiplication with multiples of ten.
Grade 4 continued working with numbers up to one million, with a particular focus on written multiplication.
In Music, we briefly discussed Pentecost and Eid al-Adha before our mosque visit. Through the song โHeaven and Earth Touch One Another,โ we explored peace as a central theme. The children even began writing their own verses, which were later sung together with the chorus.
A particularly enriching experience was our visit to the National Mosque as part of our Ethics unit on world religions. The children asked many thoughtful questions, all of which were answered patiently. The personal encounters and open discussions were especially valuable, and the impressive architecture of the mosque left a lasting impression.
The class sleepover was another highlight of the week. After enjoying a delicious dinner together, the children spent the evening laughing and playing games. One particularly exciting activity was hide-and-seek throughout the empty school building. A movie night followed, giving everyone a chance to relax before ending the experience with a breakfast prepared together the next morning.
Intensive DaF Group
Over the past two weeks, the Intensive DaF Group successfully completed Unit 9. The main topics included sports, modal verbs, and revisiting expressions of frequency. The highly motivated learners from both the primary and secondary levels also benefited from a special guest lesson led by two students from Lincoln Community School.
In grammar, the students worked intensively on modal verbs and German sentence structure, further strengthening their language skills.
As part of our team-building activities, the focus was on recognising the diversity within the group and understanding it as a valuable strength and opportunity for learning together.
At the end of the week, the Intensive DaF Group completed a learning assessment covering the topics and grammar structures from the previous two weeks. The students approached the challenge with great commitment and concentration.
Secondary School
Class 5
In German, we continued working intensively on our reading journal for the novel 35 Kilos of Hope. The students explored the book in a variety of creative ways, including character descriptions, reflections on important quotations, and tasks related to Davidโs life and personal development.
Particularly interesting were our discussions about how everyone has different strengths and that school is not equally easy for all children.
We also began collecting ideas for our upcoming โBook Boxโ project, in which students will creatively represent important objects, characters, and scenes from the novel.
Class 6
Last Friday, the time had finally come: as a reward for the stars we had collected together, we were able to enjoy our long-awaited school sleepover. The event was a great success and will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory for a long time.
After a delicious dinner at the Swiss Club, we returned to the school building, where an exciting school rally awaited us. We then ended the evening with a cosy movie night. With popcorn, ice cream, snacks, and drinks, there was plenty of laughter, conversation, and quality time together.
Beyond all the fun activities, many meaningful conversations took place, further strengthening our class community. After a rather short night, we prepared fresh waffles together for breakfast at the Swiss Club, providing a perfect ending to our sleepover.
We were particularly pleased by how naturally and responsibly everyone worked together when it came time to tidy up. Once again, the class demonstrated what a strong and supportive community we are.
In German, we successfully completed our final class test of the school year. After extensive preparation, we wrote detailed descriptions of a bicycle, correctly naming and describing its individual parts. It was especially helpful that we had previously practised using a real bicycle and carefully recorded our observations.
Another magic trick was also on the agenda. After first learning it through pictures, we practised and performed it ourselves. This time, we were far more successful than with last weekโs famous โbanana needle trick,โ which had still presented some challenges.
Grammar also remained an important part of our lessons. Frau Weber kept us busy with the four German cases. We now feel much more confident using the nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive cases and hope to be spared any further grammar challenges of this kind before the end of the school year. Whether that wish will come true remains to be seen.
Class 7/8
As part of their Ethics lessons, the students of Class 7/8 visited the National Mosque in Accra. The impressive architecture and unique atmosphere of the building left a lasting impression on everyone.
During the guided tour, students learned many interesting facts about Islam and religious life. The class showed great curiosity, taking every opportunity to ask numerous questions and learn more about religion and culture. Our sincere thanks go to the mosque and our tour guide for the informative tour and warm welcome.
In Social Studies, we discussed the current issue of Australia's social media ban for young people under the age of 16. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the opportunities and risks associated with social media, as well as the potential consequences of such a ban.
In Mathematics, we focused on revision and preparation for our class test. Key concepts were reviewed, problems discussed, and outstanding questions clarified.
Biology lessons began a new unit on sexual education. Students were introduced to the anonymous question box, where they can submit questions at the end of each lesson. We also established guidelines for respectful and open discussions. The first topics explored were friendship and conflict.
In Geography, students learned about Germanyโs glacial landscape formations. Among other things, they investigated why large glacial erratic boulders can be found in northern Germany today and how terminal moraine landscapes were formed during the Ice Ages.
In History, we explored the life and legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte.
In Physical Education, small groups presented their choreographies involving human pyramids set to music. Many creative ideas and impressive performances emerged. One group of boys, for example, presented a particularly imaginative routine entitled โBon Appรฉtit.โ
This week also marked the successful completion of our final German class test of the school year. After intensive practice, extensive reading, work with a variety of task formats, and summarising factual texts, students were finally able to demonstrate what they had learned about writing summaries of informational texts.
However, learning does not stop after a test. Throughout the week, we revisited important areas of spelling and punctuation, analysing common mistakes, reviewing rules, and strengthening our skills through a variety of exercises. This helped sharpen our language awareness and reinforce important foundations for the coming school year.
German as a Foreign Language (DaF) Classes 5โ8
This week, the DaF students worked intensively, with great motivation and concentration, in preparation for the upcoming IVA II examination in June. They completed various model tasks in reading, listening, and writing while becoming more familiar with the structure and expectations of the exam.
We also prepared for the oral examination component of the IVA II. Each student is able to choose a personal favourite topic and prepare for it individually.
The IVA II examination is particularly important for students attending German-language schools abroad. It represents an important step on the pathway toward the German Language Diploma (DSD), which can open doors to universities and higher education institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
