Between Treetops and Campfires – Classes 3 and 4 Set Off on an Adventure

On Wednesday, the day had finally arrived: it was Classes 3 and 4’s turn to go on their school trip! Full of excitement and with a bus packed to the brim, we set off for Adoko Farm near Aburi, our home for the next three days.

But before we could settle into camp, a very special adventure awaited us: a stop at the We Ape high ropes course! Courage, coordination and plenty of trust were needed here. The children threw themselves into the activities, took on new challenges and, in some cases, surprised themselves with what they could achieve. We were impressed by how bravely and confidently they tackled the course!

Afterwards, we enjoyed fascinating talks about palm trees and the animals of the rainforest. Alongside all the excitement, there was plenty to learn, too.

Following a well-deserved lunch break, we continued to Adoko Farm. On arrival, everyone moved into their tents and made themselves comfortable. Nobody stayed inside for long, though: naturally, the football had to come out straight away! The time until dinner was filled with games, laughter and exploring the farm.

Dinner was delicious jollof rice – although it came with a little surprise for some: it was rather spicy!

But our first day was far from over. Next up was a cosy evening around the campfire. Together, we relaxed by the crackling fire and reflected on the day’s adventures. And, of course, we had to play a round of “Werewolf” – which soon turned into several!

There was certainly no lie-in on Thursday: the first children woke up at half past four. As soon as it was light, they took the opportunity to explore the camp some more, play games, chase one another and play little tricks on their friends.

Even before breakfast, our next adventure began. The farm owner had invited us on a morning hike through the surrounding hills. Along the way, there were plenty of plants and animals to discover, and we were rewarded with a wonderful view of a small town. After a while, the group split up: some decided to return to camp and enjoy their time there, while the others took on the full ten-kilometre trail.

After such an energetic outing, everyone had certainly earned their breakfast. The oatmeal, Milo, eggs and bread went down so well that the children immediately announced they wanted exactly the same again the next day!

With our energy restored, it was time for more fun and games. Football and “Werewolf” were firm favourites: the footballers even held two separate tournaments, while the “Werewolf” players became experts at making persuasive arguments. Despite the heat, the day flew by. Ice cubes, cold juices and refreshing splashes of ice water helped everyone cool down along the way.

Before dinner, the farm owner took us on a tour of his fields. The children were able to taste all sorts of things, from cinnamon and sweet lemon to a very special berry that made everything taste much sweeter afterwards!

That evening, we enjoyed delicious fried rice, which also attracted a new visitor: Lilly the kitten came to say hello and immediately made friends with some of the children.

After dinner and toothbrushing, one final highlight awaited both classes: the farm team had organised a film night. Everyone settled down in front of a big screen beneath the stars – until a few children were so exhausted that they fell asleep right there on the grass.

On Friday morning, the children were woken by the rooster, who clearly enjoyed persuading our campers to leave their sleeping bags!

Once everyone was up, it was time to pack. As the tents gradually emptied and the suitcases filled up again, a tasty breakfast was waiting for the group. On the menu was Tom Brown – a lovely way to fuel up for our final morning together.

Afterwards, everyone lent a hand once more: the tents and campsite were tidied, the last personal belongings were collected, and everything was prepared for the journey home. Naturally, the wait for the bus was put to good use with yet more games.

With several days of adventures and activities behind them, many of the children were now feeling rather tired. There was one final decision to make: visit the waterfall or head straight back to school? In a group vote, the majority chose the more relaxing option: travelling directly home to Accra.

And so the classes set off on their return journey. On board: tired children, full suitcases and, above all, plenty of wonderful memories of three exciting days at Adoko Farm!
